AUBURN, Ala. - Six members of the Auburn football team have been named to the 2010 Preseason All-Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Football Team, the league office announced Tuesday. Senior linebacker Josh Bynes and senior offensive tackle Lee Ziemba were named to the first team, while junior wide receiver Darvin Adams, senior center Ryan Pugh, senior linebacker Craig Stevens and junior cornerback Neiko Thorpe were selected to the second team.
Bynes led Auburn in tackles and ranked sixth in the SEC last year, totaling 104 stops on the season (61 solo, 43 assists). He had six tackles for loss and recovered two fumbles, while also breaking up seven passes and intercepting another. He enters his senior season with 167 career tackles and with a streak of 21 consecutive starts.
Ziemba has started all 38 games at tackle over the past three seasons since becoming the first true freshman to start a season opener for the Tigers since 2002. He was named to the SEC Coaches All-SEC second team following the 2009 season, and was an honorable mention All-SEC pick by the Associated Press.
Adams set an Auburn single-season record with 60 receptions last year, and his 997 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns ranked third best in school history. He ranked second in the SEC in total receiving yards and TD catches, and his 60 catches were third most. Adams set an Auburn bowl game record with 12 catches in the Outback Bowl victory over Northwestern, and finished the season with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games, collecting 138 yards vs. Alabama and 142 vs. the Wildcats.
Pugh has started 31 games for the Tigers during his career, including all 25 games over the past two seasons. He was named to the Associated Press All-SEC second team following the 2009 season after leading the team with 70 knockdown blocks.
Stevens, who has started 26 straight games dating back to the 2007 season, was named Auburn’s Co-Defensive MVP following the 2009 campaign after finishing second on the team with 95 tackles (55 solo, 40 assists), including eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He also recovered one fumble, forced another, broke up two passes and returned an interception for a touchdown to clinch a victory over West Virginia.
Thorpe started all 13 games as a sophomore in 2009, finishing third on the squad with 84 tackles, including the game-saving stop on a fake field goal attempt in overtime against Northwestern in the Outback Bowl. He was second on the team with nine pass break-ups and had two interceptions, and returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown against Kentucky.
With six representatives on the preseason All-SEC teams, Auburn tied Georgia for the third most players selected to the squads. Florida had the most with 10, followed by Alabama with nine.
Auburn, which will open the 2010 season Sept. 4 against Arkansas State at Jordan-Hare Stadium, has a limited number of season, mini-season and single-game tickets still available. For more information, please visit auburntigers.com or call 1-800-AUB-1957.
