AUBURN – For her performance last week at the Tar Heel Invitational, Auburn sophomore Marta Sanz has been named the GolfWeek National Golfer of the Week, the publication announced this week.
Sanz, a native of Madrid, Spain, carded all three of her rounds at the Tar Heel Invitational under par, taking the individual title with rounds of 69-70-68—207. She finished one stroke ahead of North Carolina State’s Augusta James, Alabama’s Brooke Pancake and Michigan State’s Caroline Powers at 8-under 208.
The victory was the first of Sanz’s career and the second in a row for the Tigers this season after Carlie Yadloczky won the season-opening “Mo” Morial. Sanz took the title with a tournament stroke average of 69.0, beating out players from 11 teams ranked in the top 25 in the 18-team field. She is currently second on the team with a 72.33 season stroke average with two top-20 finishes.
Following last week’s win, Sanz is now ranked No. 15 in the nation in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Rankings. She was also an honorable mention selection by GolfWorld for its national player of the week.
The No. 2/16 Auburn women’s golf team will return to action Oct. 21-23 as the Tigers travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the second-annual Pac12/SEC Challenge at Holston Hills Country Club.
